St. Marie of the Incarnation Guyart

Yesterday, April 30, Ursuline Sisters around the world celebrated the feast day of St. Marie of the Incarnation Guyart, a French Ursuline who was a pioneering missionary, educator, and mystic in New France (Canada) in the 17th century, and who was canonized by Pope Francis in 2014.

Here are some quotes from St. Marie’s writings that give us glimpses into the depth and breadth of her spirituality:

  • ¨I expect everything from Jesus and from him I receive everything.
  • ¨God’s goodness is boundless for those who trust with simplicity.
  • ¨Jesus said, “Love is my name, and from now on that is what I want you to call me…”
  • ¨My body was in the monastery, but my spirit could not be confined; the Spirit of Jesus took me to India, Japan, America, to the East and to the West, to the regions of Canada, to the Huron, and to every part of the earth…I wandered those vast spaces, side by side with the bearers of the Gospel.
  • ¨My heart seems attentive and gently drawn to God…doing God’s will is not enough, it has to be done with love and good grace.

Which of these quotes most speak to you? Feel free to share any reflections in the comments section below.

Another one that I like: I experienced God’s goodness and mercy as my inheritance and that He would take care of me.
